A Brief Lesson in Lab Grown Gem Stones
Please Note: Photos of all our available stones will be added to this page momentarily. With these photos, you will be able to know what you are choosing when ordering our rings.
The gem stones we use in our settings are for the majority lab grown. Also known as: simulated, man made, synthetic, created.
Simulated gem stones have been created for many years dating back to the late Nineteenth Century when a French chemist by the name of August Verneuil perfected what came to be known as the flame fusion process.
The flame fusion method is used still today in the creation of corundum, the mineral family that all sapphire's and rubies are from.
Lab grown gemstones by definition, have essentially the same chemical composition, physical and optical properties as their natural counterparts.
So what does this mean? It means when you buy a ring with a ruby in it, you are getting a stone that is equal to its natural counterpart with a hardness of 9, refractive indices of 1.759-1.779 and with the chemical make up of aluminum and oxygen (Surprisingly this is all corundum is made from, but the bonds are so strong and dense in its creation, the result becomes very hard).
On the other hand, cubic zirconia, which is purely a man made stone (There is no natural counterpart to it) is comprised of zirconium and oxygen and it is made using the skull-melt process of creation.
Cubic zirconia maintains a hardness of 8.5 and a refractive index averaging 2.18. So CZ's are a hard, durable stone with high brilliance.
You will find a lot of our stones that are titled with CZ in the name (Our Tanzanite CZ for example) are all cubic zironias.
So make no mistake lab grown gem stones are not, and should not be associated with the word fake! They are just not natural.
